ICV’s new Cairns office brings benefits to Indigenous communities in far north QLD

ICV’s new office in Cairns represents an important regional presence in Queensland which will allow us to spend more time working with urban, regional and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout the far north.

Our new Cairns office is a place where community can drop in, have a yarn and we can work together to help them achieve their goals. It will help us better understand the people who make up our community and enable us to collaborate more effectively with other local and regional organisations and agencies working to address the needs of far north Queensland communities.

The official opening of the office took place on Tuesday 24th April. A morning tea was attended by over 30 guests, including NGO workers, Government officials and community representatives.

ICV volunteers help secure new recreational facilities for children of Yalgoo

Thanks to the hard work of two dedicated ICV volunteers, Yalgoo Shire has just been awarded a state government grant from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) of $405,908 for the installation of a covered Rage Cage, a BMX track, a skate park and the resurfacing of the tennis courts.

A Rage Cage is a reduced size, multi-use, permanent outdoor sport and recreation complex. This modern, interactive playground will contribute to the physical health and development, mental and social well being of the children of Yalgoo.

ICV volunteers Ros King and Allan Barden are delighted their hard work is paying off for the Yalgoo community. Ros wrote the winning submission and Allan continues to work on the business case for Yalgoo’s broader vision for a Youth and Community Hub. Allan spent time in the community last year and says, “To be able to make a personal contribution through ICV to this outcome is very rewarding”.
