International women’s conference in Darwin – and ICV plays a part.
Darwin is hosting people from both hemispheres for the 9th World Indigenous Women and Wellness Conference with Indigenous Community Volunteers [ICV] playing a role.
ICV people from around Australia plus staff from the Darwin office are involved in the 3-day gathering, providing assistance in areas such as media, logistical support and registration.
Around 500 people from places such as New Zealand, Canada, Samoa and Australia are taking part in the event which is being held here for the first time.
It is being hosted by the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation which represents eight Larrakia family groups, traditional owners of the land on which the conference is being held. [pictured: some of the Larrakia women involved with other conference particpants]
Conference Coordinator, Sarina Jan said it is a chance for women from various parts of the world to share knowledge and work on joint solutions for Indigenous women internationally.
“We are hoping that the conference will draw international attention to the state of affairs for Indigenous peoples globally - and particularly in Australia - a topic which seems to have slipped off the national agenda during the recent election.” Sarina said.
