New Volunteer Manager - Ali Wass
What a great organisation to be working with! I have been in the job just weeks and have had a wonderful introduction to the role.
Prior to ICV, I worked closely with Canberra’s Aboriginal youth as Education Coordinator with Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation. During my four years with Gugan, I was involved with various aspects of education support for youth who were disengaged or at risk of being disengaged from mainstream education here in the Capital.
It was an amazing time. I went from moments of despair and heartache, to times of jubilation and joy when students completed their studies and went on to further their education. Long time friendships were forged.
My personal journey has enabled me to visit some spectacular parts of our nation and to have a minute glimpse into local Aboriginal customs. I have spent time on country in the Kimberley and have made two trips to Arnhem where I was fortunate to live with a homeland community and learn the skills associated with weaving pandus. They were times that will never be forgotten and bonds that won’t be broken.
It is with this passion and sensitivity that I will endeavour to carry out my role. Please feel free to ring and have a chat. I may not have answers but I am good at listening and will strive to seek solutions.
I thank you for your contribution to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We can make a difference and we will do so together.
