Artist Professional Portfolio, ACT Project Number 1584N/08
A clothing and design business owned by two Indigenous brothers in the ACT have requested a skilled volunteer to assist them in setting up an Artist Professional Portfolio.  The business is brand new and currently has no permanent shop-front or stock recorded. The selected volunteer will provide skills to compile photos of artworks and other content in a well presented portfolio that can be updated fairly easily.

Eight participants want to learn how to use silk screening equipment to create local designs and manufacture products for marketing. This project will take eight weeks for completion. Website Design, Eastern Region, NSW project number 1417N/07
A group of Aboriginal Medical Services request a volunteer to do a skill share project with their organisations to assist in the planning, development and creation of a website. It is envisaged that the website highlight the services provided by the health services, their locations and upcoming events. The volunteer will work one on one with an employee to transfer skills, culminating in a website that the organisation can update as required.

Business Planning, South West NSW Project Number 1473N/07
This Aboriginal Corporation is a family owned and operated business.  They have a long association with Aboriginal Cultural Tourism at Lake Mungo.  They are seeking a skills transfer to enable them to develop and submit their own business plans in the future.  The estimated timeframe for this project is approximately 4 weeks.

The Willandra Lakes Region is a World Heritage Site that covers 2,400 square kilometres in south-western New South Wales.  The Aboriginal community has requested a transfer of skills in the following areas;

A small artifact manufacturing business would like assistance with skills transfer relating to business management.  This would include basic bookkeeping, accounting and office systems.  The first stage of the project would start in February and should take approximately 4 weeks.

Northern Territory

Writing/Office Administration NT Central Region Project Number 1692N/08
A community arts centre near Alice Springs require a volunteer able to assist in writing artist biographies and in setting up an office filing system and training the staff in procedures for cataloguing and maintaining the system. The volunteer will work with, and provide training to four indigenous women. The need to work closely with artists presents some wonderful opportunities! The project will commence as soon as practicable after September 8, 2008.

Small Business Feasibility Study NT, Project Number 1665N/08
An urban-rural indigenous housing corporation in the Top End is seeking a volunteer to assist it in devising a feasibility study to establish a small business providing worthwhile services to its clients. The volunteer will need small business strategic planning skills. The project is expected to commence early in 2009 and is expected to take between three to four weeks duration with the possibility of on-going liaison with the corporation as it implements the joint recommendations.

Horticulture Gravity feeding,  NT Central Desert Project Number 1685N/08
The community wish to set up a market garden and require a volunteer with skills in reticulation and gravity feeding. The community would like the volunteer to assist with the initial setup so as they can add to the market garden themselves. There are several community members keen to learn the skills involved. The project is considered to take 4 weeks to complete.

Building and Construction NT Project Number 1640N/08
A remote community in the Barkly region of the Northern Territory have requested the assistants of a volunteer to share skills in building and construction to build a workshop in the community. The volunteer will share skills in reading building plans, laying foundations and erecting a shed which will be a workshop for the community. The volunteer will work with CDEP participants for a period of 2 – 3 months. The project is set to begin in mid July 2008.

Tourism  NT Project Number 1642N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation have identified the establishment of a tourist resort on Elcho Island as a means through which employment opportunities in the community can be significantly increased and economic development enhanced. Their ultimate goal is to see visitors from around Australia and the world visit their Island and share their fabulous and unique environment and lifestyle. A volunteer is required to mentor employees to research the development of a tourist resort. The volunteer will need to work with the community, through the questions that need to be answered before drawing up a business plan and operational action plan for a tourist resort at a remote location.

Housing Development  NT Project Number 1645N/08
Housing is in short supply in and around this Top End community. The Corporation are keen to develop a housing strategy in the community to improve housing accessibility. A volunteer with experience and skills in housing development is required to skill share with the local people in developing research skills to access the viability of such a development and to assist with identifying the process involved.

Sound knowledge of the workings of a transport system, NTProject Number 1646N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation in East Arnhem Land have Identified an efficient, reliable and affordable transport system between communities as essential to enhance access to the area and improve service delivery. A volunteer is required to skill share with the local members to research the viability of a transport business that will provide access to coastal communities and mainland towns by road and ferry.

Aquaculture NT Project Number 1644N/08
This Aboriginal Corporation in the Top End require a volunteer with experience in the aquaculture business, Sea Harvest. The corporation would like to develop an economical business harvesting Trepang (sea cucumber). The local Aboriginal people have been harvesting these for hundreds of years and see this as an opportunity for economic growth within a existing market structure. The volunteer would be expected to have the skills to assist the corporation with development, research and planning to ensure that they have an ongoing viable business. Several community members have expressed a desire to learn these skills.

Retail Business NT Project Number 1643N/08
A Top end Aboriginal Corporation have requested a volunteer with skills in retail sales development. This could be a volunteer who has had experience of a large to medium sized shopping centre, who could pass on ideas to members of the corporation who are interested in starting their own business. This would also involve some basic training on such subjects as Merchandising, Customer service, staff relations, advertising, Display, stock rotation ratios, inventory management and Staff training. While also giving assistance on the questions of lease arrangements and contracts. There are several members of the corporation who wish to be trained in this field.

Mentoring in Accounting Systems,  Northern Territory Project Number 1618N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation in the top end of the Northern Territory requires a volunteer with skills in Human Resources to assist them document a skills audit of the community while assisting in training and producing simple procedures manuals. By utilising the community mentors to assist in translation and cultural protocol the volunteer will speak with as many people in the area. This is seen as the vanguard of change necessary to assist the community progress in the many ventures proposed for the future.

Legal and Governance Skills, Northern Territory   Project Number 1619N/08
A volunteer with experience in governance and legal knowledge is needed to work along side employees of an Aboriginal corporation to transfer skills and knowledge in developing and understanding contracts and to transfer knowledge in how to fulfill the reporting requirements of the Office of Aboriginal Corporations. The corporation requires this assistance so that they are able to comply with the reporting needs of the Office of Aboriginal Corporations and have an understanding of what is required to have contracts drawn up. A volunteer is needed ASAP for this project. The length of the project can be negotiated with the corporation.

Website Building and Graphic Design, NT Project Number 1621N/08
A top end Aboriginal Corporation requires a volunteer to transfer skills to employees of the corporation in the development of promotional materials (brochures, flyers etc) and to transfer skills in website maintenance. The volunteer is required to work with employees with little experience in the use of graphic design software and website maintenance. The corporation requires this assistance to develop their own promotional materials and to update information placed onto their website. The Aboriginal Corporation would like a volunteer who is able to assist on the project in September 2008 and is open to negotiating the project length with the volunteer.

Research Skills in Market Research and Business Planning,  NT Project Number 1623N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation has requested the assistance of a volunteer to develop employee’s skills in data gathering and interviewing techniques so that these employees are able to conduct market research and business planning for future project development. Mentoring in Pharmacy establishment,  NT Project Number 1624N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation in the top end require the assistance a volunteer with pharmaceutical business experience to advise and mentor employees of the corporation in the development of a pharmacy business. The corporation has identified the need for a pharmacy to service the needs of their community and other communities in the region.  The corporation would like a volunteer to skills share in September 2008. The length of the project (2 week minimum) can be negotiated with the corporation who can start immediately and are willing to negotiate the project length with the volunteer.

Internet Café setup , NT Project Number 1569N/08
A remote community in the Northern Territory would like to establish an internet café in their community so that community members can access information and resources more effectively. The community would like a volunteer who can provide knowledge to community members regarding how to establish an internet café, use of the internet and basic computer maintenance so that computers remain operational and connected to the internet. The volunteer will transfer skills to a number of CDEP participants. The community would like a volunteer for a 4 – 8 week period and are willing to negotiate a time with the volunteer.

An Aboriginal Corporation has requested a skills-transfer in submission writing. The Organisation currently has a target group of various Government Agencies, but would also like to explore their options in submitting to philanthropic agencies. The Organisation rely heavily on funding received from external bodies and believe such a skills-transfer would benefit them hugely,  by improving the quality of their submission writing and making them more competitive. The Organisation will accommodate the volunteer for three weeks throughout the project.

Submission Writing,  QLD Project Number 1662N/08
A Torres Strait Island council is seeking funding for the “Coming of the Light” celebrations in that happen annually in July. The Council is seeking to raise the profile of the event and their community by turning this annual celebration into a festival. The volunteer will be expected to skill council employees in the area of submission writing to Government Bodies. The Council has a number of identified bodies that they would like to apply to in order to be eligible for the grants being offered.

Governance & Strategic Planning, QLD Project Number 1461N/07
This incorporated body has requested governance & strategic planning training on organisational management. The volunteer would work with both staff members and the management committee to enhance their knowledge about good governance models. The management committee would also like a workshop session on interpretation of their organisations constitution. The outcome from this project will enable the organisation to develop a strategic plan. The project duration is estimated to be 2 weeks minimum.

The organization would like the assistance of a builder/handyman to transfer skills to community members in fitting out a couple of dongas. The dongas will be used as part of their business enterprise as well as for accommodation purposes. The project will be for a 2 week period and will work with 4 participants, 2 whom have some construction experience.

An education support organisation has requested a skills transfer project in developing a personal & professional development program. The organisation has requested such a project due to the lack of programs run in their area for teenage girls. This program, once implemented will help to combat self esteem issues amongst these students and prepare them for a future after their education. The Corporation requests  a volunteer that can help them with business planning skills, bookkeeping, strategic planning and some minor governance training. The corporation has asked for this help so that as the Traditional Land Owners they can acquire new skills that will assist them in planning for the future and to run successful businesses. The volunteer will train the Chairperson and 5 board members from the corporation. The corporation hopes to acquire the skills needed to plan for their future and to make good business decisions to form successful businesses that will be sustainable.

Cultural Heritage Planning  Gulf Region, QLD Project Number 1587N/08
An Aboriginal organisation located in the Gulf Region is looking for a volunteer that can provide skills transfer in Cultural Heritage Planning. The volunteer will be expected to conduct skills transfer in Cultural Heritage Planning with staff and Community Members. This would include skills such as teaching how to structure the Cultural Heritage Unit, the physical set up the office with GPS Mapping and Literature, Submission Writing and Relationship Building with Local & Regional Stakeholders.  This project may take between 4 – 6 weeks, however this is negotiable.

An Indigenous organisation in central QLD requests the skills of a volunteer to help them develop and implement strategies in the various areas of event management which includes organizing and hiring.

Research & Development and Project Implementation in Health Services, Far North QLD (Project No: 1493N/08 and others); especially addressing health for:

  • Children and Young People;
  • Women and Birthing Services;  
  • Men.

The Health Service is looking for a dedicated volunteer to work directly with its staff to provide skills transfer in research & development, program planning and project implementation. Each of these projects will take at least two weeks and can be done separately by multiple volunteers or can be combined. The combined projects would even be perfect for a husband and wife team with a health background.

Building and Plumbing, Eastern Region, Far North QLD Project Number 1520N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation has requested a skills transfer in Building Construction and Plumbing. The location is at a campground and involves the construction of two restroom kits.
The selected volunteer will work alongside 5 members of the community and be staying in basic accommodation at the campgrounds. Current licenses are required for both trade areas. This project is for 4 – 6 weeks.

MYOB + General accounting & bank reconciliations, Tasmania Project Number 1709N/08
A small self managed Aboriginal Association requires a volunteer skilled in accounting, MYOB version 11 & bank reconciliations. It is expected that the association at the completion of this project, that the association will be able to effectively & efficiently function as a business. This will ensure the management of the association. Approximately 3-4 members of the association will be trained for a four week period.

MYOB training,  Metropolitan Melbourne, Project Number 1664/08
An Aboriginal fruit and vegetable business is seeking skills in financial management through its MYOB V.14 system.  They would like to build their capacity to complete their own monthly accounts and reporting. The volunteer would be expected to work closely with the two proprietors. The project duration is negotiable. The volunteer should be local to Melbourne for irregular daily visits.

Web design and maintenance, SW, Victoria Project Number 1656N/08
An Indigenous arts, crafts and cultural tourism business has requested skill-transfer in the area of website design and website maintenance. They have recently developed an e-commerce site for their products and want to learn how to apply and maintain artistic designs and updates to the site. The project is expected to run for 2-4 weeks full time, or 1-2 days a week if the volunteer is local.

MYOB (Retail Manager & Accounting),  South West Victoria Project Number 1542N/08
A family owned and operated arts, crafts and cultural tourism business in South West Victoria has requested a skills transfer in MYOB, in particular the programmes Accounting 17 and Retail Manager. The staff is self taught and want to develop their skills to enable them to utilise the different features of the programmes. The owner is aiming for Best Practice in her bookkeeping and accounting and has heard that the two programmes can be linked, but is not sure how. The project is for 2 weeks and the chosen volunteer will be working with the owner and 2 other staff members.

Service Management Governance, WA Project Number 1550N/08
A co-ordinator of a health service would like to refresh/enhance skills required to manage a health service, as such has requested assistance in all areas of service management and skills associated with running a health service effectively.  These skills would include: organisational and community planning, financial management, staff management, organisational governance The project is expected to be an ongoing mentoring role with the volunteer spending the initial 5 weeks assisting and transferring skills to the co–coordinator on a day to day basis or to the extent of the availability of the volunteer.  After this initial stage, support may be provided on a more ad hoc basis and may even be through email and phone contact.

This Aboriginal Corporation have requested the skills transfer/development in strategic planning, they have requested the skills transfer process to enhance the abilities of corporation members to develop strategic plans. The corporation members would like to use skills gained to develop strategic plans to provide the community with direction in to the future. Opportunities exist for the corporation and community to form various partnerships with business and companies with in their region. The volunteer would be expected to assist community with their strategic plan whilst transferring skills in strategic planning, implementing mile stones and ensuring the corporation participants understand each step of the plan. There are six members of the corporation willing to be involved in the skills transfer process. The community envisage the project to run for 4-8 weeks commencing October 2008.

Cultural Awareness Program Development,  Pilbara WA Project Number 1628N/08
This Aboriginal Association has requested the transferral of skills in the area of cultural awareness program development; the community have requested this skills transfer process to enhance/develop community member’s abilities to develop cultural awareness programs, including the development of curriculum, and PowerPoint presentations. The community has a wealth of information on the traditional owners, and would like to develop a cultural awareness program as there are various companies with in their region who are willing to pay the corporation for the delivery of Cultural awareness workshops to their employees. There are six community members willing to be involved in the skills transferral project. The community envisage the project to run for 3-4 weeks commencing in late July.

This Aboriginal Corporation would like to gain skills in the area of Business planning, the corporation would like to develop a business plan and related business skills related to providing cultural awareness training as a profit making business. As there are various companies and business with in their region that request and require cultural awareness training for their employees. Various businesses and companies have approached the corporation requesting the development and delivery of cultural awareness programs with in the region. The volunteer would be expected transfer skills in Business planning to members of the Aboriginal Corporation. There are three members of the corporation willing to be involved in the skills transfer process. The corporation envisage the project to run for a 3- 4 week period.

Policy and Procedures manual,  Kimberley WA Project Number 1535N/08
This project involves transferring skills in researching, consultation and documentation of the policies and procedures of the community and the development of a policy and procedures manual.  The volunteer would also transfer skills in re-writing the community constitution.  The project will run for approximately 6 weeks and it is hoped to commence some time after June 2008.

House Painting,  PILBARA WA Project Number 1581N/08
This Aboriginal community have requested transferral of skills in the area of painting houses externally, the community family groups will then used the skills gained to paint their family homes internally. They have requested this assistance to develop/enhance community family member’s abilities in preparation, mixing and painting houses internally and externally. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in the area of external house paining, minor repairs to surfaces in preparation for painting. The volunteer will transfer skills to community family members at individual dwellings with in the community, family members will then use the skills gained to paint the interior of their homes. The community envisage the project to run for a six week period. The community have all the resources required to make their project successful.

Governance Training, Pilbara WA Project Number 1571N/08
An art group have requested assistance in Governance training in order to build the capacity of the Board to determine and drive decisions and lead the organisation. The volunteer would be required to transfer a range of Governance skills directly to the Centre’s Board members. This will better equip the Board to act as the governing body, provide board members with greater understanding of their roles and what will be required of them in terms of governing a service effectively. There are four members of the RAG board who are willing to be part of the skills transfer process.

This Language Resource Centre have requested assistance in researching funding grants and writing submissions to provide the service with a clear procedure and skills in preparing grant applications.  The centre has requested this assistance to develop/enhance staff abilities in researching grants and developing successful submissions to increase their resources and increase the effectiveness of their operations.  The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in grants research and submission writing primarily to apply for funds for further development of two of their offices, to purchase audio visual equipment as well as upgrading their service vehicle.

There are four staff members willing to be trained.

The corporation have requested assistance to build the capacity of the corporation so as they can effectively manage, lead and direct the corporation towards its vision as per the corporation’s strategic plan. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in the areas of Governance, business development, relationship building and the establishment of Joint venture partnerships. The corporation would like to gain a volunteer on a long term engagement (Governance) over a six month period; there are four (4) corporation members willing to be trained.

Building Skills,  Bakers Hill near Northam – WA. Project Number 1354N/07
A family Corporation who are managing a farm in the Avon Region of WA wish to request a volunteer with building skills.  In particular, they want a volunteer who can work with the committee to draw up the building plan (including resources and materials needed, liaise with the shire etc), coordinate the project which will include training members of the family to build 2 sheds/workshops, successfully place 2 transportable homes on property and make a breezeway (including setting up the site/concreting).  The project will be carried out in 2/3 stages beginning in August 2007.  It could take 3-6 months to complete.
