A remote community in the Barkly region of the Northern Territory have requested the assistants of a volunteer to share skills in building and construction to build a workshop in the community. The volunteer will share skills in reading building plans, laying foundations and erecting a shed which will be a workshop for the community. The volunteer will work with CDEP participants for a period of 2 – 3 months. The project is set to begin in mid July 2008.

An Aboriginal Corporation have identified the establishment of a tourist resort on Elcho Island as a means through which employment opportunities in the community can be significantly increased and economic development enhanced. Their ultimate goal is to see visitors from around Australia and the world visit their Island and share their fabulous and unique environment and lifestyle. A volunteer is required to mentor employees to research the development of a tourist resort. The volunteer will need to work with the community, through the questions that need to be answered before drawing up a business plan and operational action plan for a tourist resort at a remote location.

This Aboriginal Corporation in the Top End require a volunteer with experience in the aquaculture business, Sea Harvest. The corporation would like to develop an economical business harvesting Trepang (sea cucumber). The local Aboriginal people have been harvesting these for hundreds of years and see this as an opportunity for economic growth within a existing market structure. The volunteer would be expected to have the skills to assist the corporation with development, research and planning to ensure that they have an ongoing viable business. Several community members have expressed a desire to learn these skills.

This could be a volunteer who has had experience of a large to medium sized shopping centre, who could pass on ideas to members of the corporation who are interested in starting their own business. This would also involve some basic training on such subjects as Merchandising, Customer service, staff relations, advertising, Display, stock rotation ratios, inventory management and Staff training. An Aboriginal Corporation in the top end of the Northern Territory requires a volunteer with skills in Human Resources to assist them document a skills audit of the community while assisting in training and producing simple procedures manuals. A volunteer with experience in governance and legal knowledge is needed to work along side employees of an Aboriginal corporation to transfer skills and knowledge in developing and understanding contracts and to transfer knowledge in how to fulfill the reporting requirements of the Office of Aboriginal Corporations. The corporation requires this assistance so that they are able to comply with the reporting needs of the Office of Aboriginal Corporations and have an understanding of what is required to have contracts drawn up. A remote community in the Northern Territory would like to establish an internet café in their community so that community members can access information and resources more effectively. A co-ordinator of a health service would like to refresh/enhance skills required to manage a health service, as such has requested assistance in all areas of service management and skills associated with running a health service effectively. These skills would include: organisational and community planning, financial management, staff management, organisational governance The project is expected to be an ongoing mentoring role with the volunteer spending the initial 5 weeks assisting and transferring skills to the co–coordinator on a day to day basis or to the extent of the availability of the volunteer. After this initial stage, support may be provided on a more ad hoc basis and may even be through email and phone contact.

This Aboriginal Corporation have requested the skills transfer/development in strategic planning, they have requested the skills transfer process to enhance the abilities of corporation members to develop strategic plans. The corporation members would like to use skills gained to develop strategic plans to provide the community with direction in to the future. Opportunities exist for the corporation and community to form various partnerships with business and companies with in their region. The focus of the strategic plans is to provide direction for the corporation and community in terms of engaging present and future financial opportunities. The volunteer would be expected to assist community with their strategic plan whilst transferring skills in strategic planning, implementing mile stones and ensuring the corporation participants understand each step of the plan. There are six members of the corporation willing to be involved in the skills transfer process. The community envisage the project to run for 4-8 weeks commencing October 2008.

House Painting, PILBARA WA Project Number 1581N/08
This Aboriginal community have requested transferral of skills in the area of painting houses externally, the community family groups will then used the skills gained to paint their family homes internally. They have requested this assistance to develop/enhance community family member’s abilities in preparation, mixing and painting houses internally and externally. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in the area of external house paining, minor repairs to surfaces in preparation for painting. The volunteer will transfer skills to community family members at individual dwellings with in the community, family members will then use the skills gained to paint the interior of their homes. The community envisage the project to run for a six week period. The community have all the resources required to make their project successful.

An art group have requested assistance in Governance training in order to build the capacity of the Board to determine and drive decisions and lead the organisation. The volunteer would be required to transfer a range of Governance skills directly to the Centre’s Board members. This will better equip the Board to act as the governing body, provide board members with greater understanding of their roles and what will be required of them in terms of governing a service effectively. This Language Resource Centre have requested assistance in researching funding grants and writing submissions to provide the service with a clear procedure and skills in preparing grant applications. The centre has requested this assistance to develop/enhance staff abilities in researching grants and developing successful submissions to increase their resources and increase the effectiveness of their operations. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in grants research and submission writing primarily to apply for funds for further development of two of their offices, to purchase audio visual equipment as well as upgrading their service vehicle.

Building Skills, Bakers Hill near Northam – WA. Project Number 1354N/07
A family Corporation who are managing a farm in the Avon Region of WA wish to request a volunteer with building skills. In particular, they want a volunteer who can work with the committee to draw up the building plan (including resources and materials needed, liaise with the shire etc), coordinate the project which will include training members of the family to build 2 sheds/workshops, successfully place 2 transportable homes on property and make a breezeway (including setting up the site/concreting). The project will be carried out in 2/3 stages beginning in August 2007. It could take 3-6 months to complete.
