Opportunities

ICV has diverse projects with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. Volunteers with all kinds of experience and skills are needed.

The projects listed below are examples of some that are currently available - there are too many to list them all.

Of course, you need to be registered as an ICV volunteer before we can begin matching you to a project. And you should remember that we are community driven and focused - our business is primarily about hunting and gathering volunteers for community-owned projects.


Media Support

The Gunbalanya Community (Oenpelli) in West Arnhem are looking for a volunteer with radio, media broadcasting and editing experience.

The volunteer will need to be able to teach adult learning, knowing that English maybe a second or third language with known barriers around literacy and numeracy. Topics taught will include radio equipment basics, compiling content for radio shows, interview techniques, recording and playback and trouble shooting,

The volunteer will also be required to leave a process in place for participants, together with a manual for participants to pass knowledge onto others. It is hoped that, after completion of the project, participants will be able to gain qualifications in broadcasting.

Council Members support FNQ

An Aboriginal Community Council Office located in Far North Queensland requires two volunteers e.g. a husband & wife team, a couple or two volunteers to assist with the following:

• Conduct a skills audit of all 150 council staff members.
• Identify what each individual’s training needs are. May need to summarise the council’s HR policy and if there are any existing individual performance plans in place.
• Research what appropriate training courses are available to council staff using a co-ordinated approach with project applicant and HR Manager.
• Liaise with local job service providers to also discuss what training courses are available to council staff.
• Develop a training plan identifying and outlining what the training needs are for each individual.
• Develop a register to record this information for easy access of council senior staff members.

The timeframes and work will possibly take longer than 8 weeks and the volunteers will be required in the community for the majority of the time.

Graphic Designer Needed

Perth based Indigenous radio station Noongar Radio seek a skilled graphic designer to help design their corporate sponsorship package. They are looking for someone to assist in putting the existing marketing document into a sleek, appealing and readable format.

Noongar Radio provides an important platform for Indigenous people throughout the Perth Region and is committed to the broadcast of positive, informed, empowering programming which support and promote the achievements and aspirations of the Noongar community it serves. By having a sleek and professional corporate sponsorship package, Noongar Radio hope to raise their profile in the corporate world as well as increase sales of airtime in order to continue operating.

There is no travel involved for this project - all work can be done remotely.

Martu Literacy Project 2012

ICV has been requested to assist Adult Martu community members to improve their numeracy and literacy for everyday use. ICV are seeking volunteers with a teaching degree or significant experience working with adult students with low levels of functional literacy and numeracy. This assignment would suit ex - teachers, who can commit one month or more to living in a remote community in WA in the second half of 2012.

July 2012 School Holiday Activity Leaders Wanted

The successful school holiday program is on again!

We are looking for 7 enthusiastic ICV’ers under the age of 35 to join us in remote WA in July. You don’t need to have experience, just lots of energy and willingness to work with a team to pull off a fun filled two week activity program.If you are interested in building ongoing relationships and are able to dedicate one holiday period per year, then the School Holiday program is for you.

Our ideal candidates will preferably have a valid drivers licence and a current first aid certificate. Bronze medallion swimming qualifications are also highly sought after though not essential.

Grant Writing in WA

Life Without Barriers in a non for profit organisation specialising in the areas of Child Protection, Disability Services, Mental Health, Youth Justice and Immigration.

They are currently in the process of attracting Aboriginal Foster/Host Carers plus Support Workers and Respite Carers.

These people are willing to provide a service to clients, however they do not have the required facilities. LWB’s Aboriginal Projects Program Manager,Tony Sibosado, is seekingh a local volunteer to guide him through the grant writing process in order to obtain funds to cover the costs of these facilities.

If this project is successful LWB clients will be able to remain in their homelands close to their immediate and extended families, plus community people will be provided with the capacity to earn a living by being employed with Life Without Barriers.

Bush Medicines

Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service (GAMS) in New South Wales’ Riverina/MIA want to engage an expert in chemistry or a related field that could assist community members and transfer skills in extracting oils from traditional bush medicine plants to produce creams, liniments and bath oils.

A volunteer is needed from March 2011 to June 2011 (one day per week). He/she will have skills in oil extraction from plants. The suitable person may be someone who has worked in extracting tea tree or lavender oils in previous roles or hobbies.

The Griffith AMS ‘Men’s Group’ will assist in the women in collecting plant matter for this project.

Potter needed in the NT

Marngarr a small community around 15 k’s from Gove in the NT is hoping to add to its arts and crafts program through development of pottery in the community.

Marngarr owns a kiln, and the community has previously undertaken a pottery program, but it was not done in a professional way.

Marngarr would like to source a trained pottery worker to visit the community, and help Marngarr develop this industry.

This would involve educating management on what materials to buy, and from whom, and also teach the community members to make pottery.

If possible Marngarr would like to investigate the practicalities of sourcing local materials for the process.
