Poruma St Andrews Community Church Repair and Heritage Protection Project

Project Description: This project will provide engineering advice on the repair options and cost outlines for Poruma’s two Anglican Church buildings. It will examine whether it is possible to restore and complete Poruma’s original coral St Andrews church which was built in 1926 or the second church built in 1950 both of which are now unsafe. The second church was built with asbestos sheeting. The community’s first preference is to revamp and make safe the original coral church. The community would like a volunteer with structural design and architecture skills to come and make detailed assessments of the unfinished coral church building and the asbestos sheeting church. Also, the feasibility of finishing the coral church and robust costs estimates of doing this work, otherwise the community would like advice on heritage protection of the coral church structure as it currently stands. Once the design work and repair costs are completed, the project will be followed by: (i) a funding hunting and gathering project that will identify and secure funds to do the work on the church/s; and (ii) a construction project to repair the church/s. This last part could also include ICV volunteer trades people giving their skills and working with local Poruma people to repair the churches. The original structural engineering ICV volunteer would also be available to return and advise on the construction work when it is carried out.

Project Aims and Objectives: The project’s overall aim is to secure Poruma community’s social and cultural strength and resilience. This will be achieved by repairing the church which is a central part of local culture. This broader aim will be achieved by developing a plan for restoring and making safe for use the original St Andrews coral church at Poruma and repairing the asbestos sheeting church. Ultimately, the community would like to move into the coral church. But if this first priority is infeasible, the project will achieve its overall aim by repairing the asbestos sheeting church and ensuring basic maintenance and heritage protection of the coral church. The residents of Poruma are people of very strong Christian faith. Their church is a major community hub. Repairing and making safe Poruma’s church will help Poruma to retain its’ community strength and development.

Hot Bread Shop - Baker

This Indigenous owned and operated business requires assistance in the bakery operation. The business has struggled to obtain qualified bakers to ease the pressure on the owner and the existing staff. The owner needs to be able to free himself up to spend more time on business development.

The volunteer is required ASAP for an extended period if possible. The applicant is flexible with regard to duration of project and willing to work around volunteer availability and skills. A Volunteer with skills in Baking would be ideal but not necessary; the owner is willing to teach the Volunteer in order to lend a helping hand in the store.

The shop employs a number of Indigenous workers and offers training in the bakery to all staff. The introduction of a volunteer baker will provide more efficient, continuous learning even when the owner is not working in the bakery.

Jalmardanga Community Historic Sheering Shed Repair Project

Jalmardanga Community is about 100 km West of Derby in WA, they run a tour business bringing people out to the Mt Anderson to learn about the local history and culture of the area. Part of the tour involves a visit to the old sheering shed at Mount Anderson Station.

The community would like some assistance with repairing and ensuring the old sheering shed and kitchen are safe for tours, and to carry on sharing the history of the local Aboriginal people for generations to come.

This project will be good for the local youth who will learn valuable building skills so they can then carry out their own repairs and building maintenance.

Their goal is to upgrade all of the old buildings at Mount Anderson and to be able to turn it into a Station Stay for the travelers. The History of this place goes back to the 1880’s when the aboriginal people of the area where gathered up and put to work on the sheering station. They now have possession of this place and would like it to become a source of employment, training and income for the community members.

They propose to start in April 2010.
