The power of public speaking

After successfully completing a video project in the Yarralin Community, Victoria Daly Regional Council approached us to work with Wesley from the Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) team to support him improve his public speaking skills.

Yarralin Community is located on Ngarinyman Country, 380km southwest of Katherine.

Skilled volunteer Aggie mentored Wesley in the finer points of public speaking. This included learning to design presentations for maximum impact, how to analyse an audience and deliver a speech, and techniques to overcome nervousness to present with confidence and speak with maximum impact.

Wesley is already a talented speaker; however, this project has built his skills and improved career opportunities. As well as teaching these new skills to other staff and community members.

Wesley will put his skills to use throughout the school, community and the wider organisation at Victoria Daly Regional Council, who will offer Wesley more opportunities in public speaking.

The skills of delivering professional business presentations will not only benefit Wesley, but the wider community and staff.

I learnt so much from Aggie. She showed me how to identify key points of what I was trying to get across to my audience.

WESLEY, RSAS SUPERVISOR, YARRALIN.

Wesley told me he now knows how to do a presentation and the skills he learnt are something he can pass onto community members.
